GrailNest’s Funko Fake Detector Just Got a Major Upgrade
We’ve released a major update to the GrailNest Funko Pop Fake Detector, focused on reducing false warnings, improving photo quality, and making every result easier to understand.
More accurate, collector-friendly results
Most Funko Pops are not commonly counterfeited. The detector now accounts for that.
If a Pop is not on GrailNest’s highly counterfeited list and its identifying details match our catalog, the detector will treat it as likely authentic unless strong conflicting evidence is found.
Frequently counterfeited releases receive additional scrutiny and require multiple independent matches before receiving a reassuring result.
Fewer false fake warnings
A single imperfect machine reading will no longer cause a genuine Pop to be labeled high risk.
The detector now:
- Requires two independent strong contradictions before showing “High Fake Risk”
- Treats visual differences as advisory rather than conclusive
- Requests a barcode retake when a reading is uncertain
- Separates catalog-selection conflicts from actual counterfeit evidence
- Excludes blurry, dark, overexposed, and low-resolution photos from analysis
Better barcode verification
Barcode analysis now checks multiple enhanced versions of the uploaded image, validates the barcode’s checksum, and looks for agreement between readings.
This helps prevent glare, camera angles, or an isolated decoding mistake from creating an incorrect result.
A better photo-upload experience
The scan form now gives immediate, specific feedback when a photo needs to be retaken.
Collectors will see guidance for:
- Blurry photos
- Poor lighting
- Overexposure
- Low resolution
- Cropped or angled barcodes
- Missing identifying details
Required photos must be clear enough to analyze before the scan can run. Phone-to-desktop photo syncing now preserves the real quality assessment as well.
Exact variant confirmation
Sticker, exclusive, regional, and release-year differences matter. Catalog search results now show more identifying information so collectors can confirm they selected the exact version they own.
This reduces false conflicts caused by comparing a Pop against the wrong catalog variant.
Evidence-first reports
Results now lead with a plain-language conclusion:
- Consistent with the selected Pop
- Some details need review
- Strong conflicting evidence
- Not enough evidence yet
Each report explains which details matched, which conflicted, what could not be read, and which photos should be retaken. The numerical score remains available, but the supporting evidence now takes priority.
Reviewed visual references only
Visual comparisons are now limited to human-reviewed reference images. Generic marketplace photos and potentially incorrect listing images no longer influence authenticity results.
Visual similarity remains an advisory check because differences in lighting, protectors, box wear, backgrounds, and camera angles can affect image comparisons.
Helping the detector improve
Collectors can now tell us whether they know an item is authentic or counterfeit, confirm that the exact catalog variant was selected, and explain which part of a result appeared incorrect.
This feedback feeds a new internal calibration dashboard that tracks possible false warnings and missed counterfeits.

No photo-based tool can guarantee authenticity. GrailNest’s detector is designed to organize evidence, identify mismatches, catch obvious problems, and help collectors make better-informed decisions.
This update makes that process more cautious, transparent, and useful—especially for genuine Pops that previously risked being flagged because of one imperfect photo or machine reading.
